I poured motor oil into my power steering resevior by accident on Monday. I still made the 2 hour drive to Los Angeles to see Minvan perform with a bunch of other fun bands in an art gallery (Sean Carnage monday nights at Pehrspace). I met them (Minivan is Nathan and his friend Barry) at a groovy little diner in Hollywood called Alexander’s Bright Spot. The polished stainless steel counters and deep maroon vinyl seats reminded me of vintage patina. Our waitress had to be at least 85 years old and called us “guys and dolls” in a fashion that was more talk-show than food service worker. Sonic Youth played in the background as we each ordered in turn, receiving a wink and a “ya want mayo with that?” from the waitress. Strangly enough, all of our sandwhiches arrived sans condiments, but Ms. talk-show did bring us a soup bowl of ranch “for the fries, I know how you kids are” without asking.
The show was super. I think that there were 5 bands altogether and Minivan was second. The first band was so terrible and loud without any showmanship (accentuated by the fact that the guy playing bass was supposed to be a member of Black Flag), that when Minivan got on with their acoustic set, they were so refreshing! Nathan is incredible and to this day remains my favorite musician. It is just in his soul. He and I get into conversations about how art has sort of hijacked our lives. We watch those that we graduated from high school with move on to have families and careers and change diapers, and Nate and I are still plugging away at some barely-above-minimum-job so that we can pay some rent so that we can have a place to create art. It’s the only way that art gets made though, so it must be done.
These past 2 weeks, I have felt like I’m living in the garden of delights…it’s been so thrilling to smell the lilacs that are blooming right outside my door, and wet my feet in the puddled rain, and feel the undeniable pounding of my heart at the presence of a certain young man. Stay tuned, things could get a little mushy.
