oh how I linger in the morning with mister danger. He is smiley and calm and delicious in those early morning hours. I find myself looking forward to the time that he will sleep through the night, hold his own bottle, entertain himself, play with the other kids, help me bake cookies, request to be a vampire for Halloween, ride his bike around the neighborhood, have a crush on a girl in his class, pass the sacrament at church, want to borrow the car, and take a pretty girl to prom. I know though that all of those things will come too soon and I will look back with a warm ache to these days. So after we give Dad kisses and he goes off to work, we linger and watch the sun rise and slowly creep over our brightly-sheeted bed. We giggle and sing and I tell him about all of the things that we will do that day. I inspect his tiny toes and fingers and give him kisses for every digit. He yawns and stretches and wiggles. We usually do this until one of us gets so hungry that we can’t stand it, and the day must begin, and we must re-enter the world of time moving forward and little boys growing up.
I hope to fill myself up with these mornings. I hope to experience them so completely that the memories, in retrospect, are full and serene, and joyous.
