Thanks for all of your votes over at Ohdeeoh. We were oh-so-close to being in the final round. I thought that I would post the pictures of Jack’s nursery for all ya’ll, along with the little interview that was posted over at Ohdeeoh.
And, the interview for Ohdeeoh.
Name/Age: Jack, 2 months
Location: Pensacola, Florida
Family: Jack, mom Laura and and dad
Room Size: 100 square feet
Division: BabyTip for Living Small with Kids: We’re still brand new at the sharing of our home with a child, but one thing we’ve learned is that we don’t need all of the baby gear that we were told we would need. Most of it is supurfluous and just clutters up your space.
What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in putting together this room?
There are no windows in this room! It’s an interior room and can be very drab…but other than that our biggest challenge was that we’re living in a rented home and everything has to be temporary. We aren’t allowed to paint or put holes in the walls. I love color so I tried to include it in every other place possible. We chose gray, orange, teal, and lime green for the colors and used them all over. We painted the crib lime green, dyed the sheets and the carpet (a t-shirt latch hook rug that I made) grey, and used the same coordinating colors for a quasi-bookcase that we built. The room has two built-in units in the corner. One has shelves, but the other was just an open space (it used to be open to the next room, which is now a separate apartment) so we built boxes and rectangles out of 1×6’s to use as shelving. The lanterns were purchased with the colors in mind as well, and they were hung from the ceiling with 3m’s removable hooks.
The other, smaller challenge was money- we are on a very tight budget, but we were able to pull off this space for about $220:
rocking chair from a thrift store: $30
lanterns, bulbs, wiring, and hooks: $90
wood and screws for bookcase: $45
paint: $30
robot wall decal: $5
latch hook rug supplies: $25
crib: free from a friend who was cleaning out her garage! As far as resources go, I found lots of inspiration on your site (and flickr and modernnursery.com).
Thanks!

I love how you did his room and how it turned out. I will have to try those hooks you use because we are renters too and try really hard not to damage anything. I love the colors and how creative you are with decorating it turned out awesome
You are so darn talented, I am very jealous!!! AWESOME room for Mr. Jack, wish it was my room
I love this room. I love all the lanterns. Where did you find them all? You are so creative.
How are all the lanterns wired?
We purchased lamp wire, sockets, electical tape, and a plug and switch from our local hardware store- I think we ordered something like 30 feet of lamp wire! We mapped out where we wanted each lantern to hang and how long it should be (and what size socket depending on the size of the lantern), and then cut the lamp wire accordingly, splicing in the hanging lengths of lamp wire, that we had spliced the sockets onto. It’s really just a custom made string of lights. =)
Hi, I am about to paint my Jenny lind crib and I was wondering if you used spray paint or paint in a can? Also, did you paint the plastic parts on the crib? I love how yours turned out and hope mine looks half that cute! Any tips would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Angela
Hello Angela, and congrats!
We used spray paint- it seemed like it would be so much easier than trying to get a brush around all of those turned bars nicely. It really did work out great- we took all of the plastic parts off first and then lightly lightly sanded the crib, just to be sure that it was clean. I say “we”, but really, my parents worked on this in my garage while I was 2 weeks overdue, sitting on the porch with my feet up. Good luck!

This room was decorated fashionably. It’s hard in your part to design this room due to your situation that you are just renting the house. But then it turned good and great that even though that is the current scenario, it doesn’t stop you to made a beautiful room for your kid. Bravo for that!
