books saved from the journal-making machine

August 18th, 2009 by admin

I make journals for two reasons. One. I like to shop at thrift stores. Like is actually an understatement. If you asked me what I wanted to do for my birthday, or possibly for my last day on earth, I would probably reply, “wander St. Vinnies”. Having a purpose in this wandering and allowing myself to purchase large quantities of something is so satisfying to me. Two. I write in a journal everyday, and have since I was 13. This means that I have mountains of journals that are filled with longings and milkshake consumption and middle-of-the-night ramblings. It also means that I myself consume journals faster than I can find ones to like.

In my quest for super quirky books to turn into journals, I often find books that fit the bill but I can’t bring myself to destroy. Here are a collection of just such books from my journal-making adventure this last year. Many of these are now in Jack’s room, waiting for the time when he needs a story to fall asleep.

These last two actually will be journals- but they are so reserved for me.

Laura & The Art of Living

I see large full bookshelves for me in the future. The distant future.
In the near future I see stacks of books crammed into every corner in this rented space. And boxes of them in my parents basement.

loves all ya’ll.

WOW! I so wish I was the journal writer that you are…it’s not too late though I’ve been thinking about getting started. I can’t say I blame you for not wanting to tear apart those books I can’t stand to see a good book destroyed. It’s a cool idea though to make your own…I think that may be part of my problem all the journals I have seen have been so plain and ordinary and boring. Sounds like I will have to be on the lookout to do something about that. Keep at it you are an inspiration and I know that someday your children will love to have that glimpse into their mother’s life. I know that the one missionary journal of my dad’s was a delight and treasure to read I only had two years of his life recorded but it was something and it gave me a glimpse into who he really was besides just my dad.
