Darling Mr. Jack,
You are now 6 months old. You were born on your cousin’s 6 month birthday. He turns 1 year old today (Happy birthday Samuel Lightning Alexander Hawker, we love you!). It will be nice your whole life to have dozens of cousins who are older and wiser and can give you advice and help you get into more sophisticated mischief than you would be able to accomplish on your own.
This month we started feeding you solid foods, very inconsistanly. You’ve taken to those little rice puffs that melt in your saliva, but you can’t quite bring yourself to enjoy that mushy rice cereal (we don’t blame you). It’s really cute to see you and your pink gums chomping away at those tiny “a” shaped puffs. We’ve also been lacing your bottle with poopy juice. I don’t think that I need to explain why.
Two little sharp things that will soon appear as teeth have popped up along your bottom gum line. You let us know that they were coming several months ago when you started soaking a shirt with your drool every 2 minutes, and chewing on your fingers as if they were hershey bars. We are glad to see them coming through, although I’m not quite ready for your sweet little face to change.
In an effort to buy myself an extra hour or two a day, we got you an exersaucer. You love it, most of the time. You bounce and bounce and chew and laugh. I bring you right next to me on the computer or the sewing machine while I work. You love reaching for the things that we place far away, and of course, everything ends up in your mouth.
You go to the farmer’s market with us twice a week and you are the major draw at our booth. Our journals are cute, but it’s out baby that gets people out of bed and down to the market. I hear these two things everytime I am at the market: “how much for the baby?”, and “what a good/sweet/cute/well-behaved/active/alert/precious baby you have there”. Sometimes you swing with Dad, and sometimes you get passed around to all of the vendors for a hold. You are a great salesperson.
There’s no doubt that you’re growing. Even I notice it and I spend almost every second of your life with you. When once you seemed so tiny, now you seem so big. I’ve had to say goodbye and pack up clothes that you are just now too large to wear (I’m thinking of you Mr. Seersucker suit). This of course, means that a whole new wardrobe is ahead- and there are some things that I am so excited to make you wear. I can only make you dress according to my tastes while you can’t protest, so you’ll be little vintage Jack while you’re mine to dress.
You are not a fan of shoe wearing.
You’ve realized this month that you are ticklish and your Dad and I have been using that to our advantage. You love to giggle and laugh and play. You even laugh at the movies that we watch (you found Pee Wee’s Big Adventure and Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas particularly amusing).
Your had your first cold this month and while it wasn’t too terrible for anyone in the family, we did need some time to cath up from the lasck of sleep that we experienced. You learned that it’s hard to eat and sleep with a stuffy nose.
We love you Mr. Danger. You are such a sweet and silly little boy and we are delighted to get to be a part of your life. Expect more kisses and hugs and tickles in the coming days and weeks!
