the palafox market

June 18th, 2010 by admin

Our saturday mornings usually begin at 6am with Garth waking up before me to load the car and me lounging in bed until the last possible second. Then I waddle around the house gathering snacks, water, change, and toys for Jack. We drive in our two ultra small cars the mile and a half to downtown Pensacola and spend the next 6 hours having the most fun one can have when not sleeping in.

The Palafox Market pops up every Saturday from 8am-2pm in Martin Luther King, Jr. Plaza, which is right smack in the middle of Palafox Street. We’ve been selling there since Jack was 6 weeks old! The produce from local farmers is the best and we’ve become friends with many of the vendors (hi Jessica! hi Bia! Hi Audah and Popster!). I sell my bow ties and journals and Garth plays the piano, and Jack oversees and coordinates everything- and I mean everything. Now that Mr Danger is walking he has to wander up and down the market conducting random samplings and meet and greets with vendors and customers. This wears him out enough for his weekly market nap which takes place on Dad’s chest, in a hammock, under some shady trees right next to our tent. This spectacle of bow-tie-wearing-Dad napping with the-cutest-baby-ever draws a crowd and enthusiastic picture-takers (of which I am included). One of these days I’ll make a photo album of just nap pictures from the market.

It gets hot and muggy and sometimes we have to throw a tarp over my books and wait out a little rain in the middle of the tent, but it is always a good time and we love being out in the community as a family (and we love the travel money that we make!). If you’re local, we’ve got blueberries and the best peaches in the world right now- and if you’re not, find a farmer’s market in your area! There is such a difference in the taste and quality of local produce. Yummy.

We’ll be there tomorrow braving the humidity and guzzling water- we hope to see you!

We love market day too! We buy berries, bread, soap, korean garlic and random produce. The people are always so nice. We also very much agree that market food always tastes better than store bought stuff.
