our long Memorial Day weekend

Our long weekend went like this:
friday: sleep in. walk/bike/jog to the bike shop to drop of Garth’s bike for a tuneup. meander to the thrift store. buy books. get home right before it pours rain. screen in porch. race plastic boats down the flooding gutters.

saturday: wake way too early. get mad at each other. drive to the famer’s market in the pouring rain. get soaked setting up. sell 2 notebooks and 2 bow ties. hang out in the hammock. make english muffin bread pizza. watch “shop around the corner” and have s’mores on the front porch in our tent. fall asleep. retreat inside at 2am because it’s too hot in the tent.

sunday: sleep in. speek in sacrament meeting on tithing. eat spinach salad and banana pudding with the branch. take a nap. snack. take a walk through the neighborhood. watch a movie and sew. hear the penguin fall off the dryer. witness the aftermath. snack. fall asleep.

monday: lounge in bed all morning. run. upload photos of the weekend. blog.

still to come: a short celebration on the porch once garth is done hanging our new screen door, pizza and a movie at the Silver Screen, fhe, and finishing some custom orders.

As I was taking photos the other day my camera started giving me an error message. After some research I learned that the particular message I was getting (the dreaded error 99) was a catch-all error message for any number of things that could be wrong, and I followed the online instructions to narrow down the possibilities. 22 pictures of my window and feet later, I’ve discovered that it’s my lens. The poor thing produces the error message at any focal length below 33 or above 40. So if I would like to take a picture (which I do several times a day) I have a very limited range of possibilities. Here is the Palafox Farmer’s Market yesterday, all at a fixed 35mm focal length, and most of them without me looking through the viewfinder.

The truth is, it’s refeshing in a world of infinite choices to be limited. I’ve always found that when I’m stuck artisticly, the best thing I can do is give myself very narrow rules to follow- it always brings out something interesting.

I’m ordering some new camera equipment this week since my camera is really just an extension of my hand, and my most essential recording-of-my-life-tool, and because I’m shooting a wedding in two weeks and need my choices back.
