Garth started his real job yesterday. He’s been “checking in” for the last 2 months but now he’ll be working 12 hour days. The days are long for him and they are long for me, so I have been trying to get out of the house with the kids early in the day so that we are not going crazy by mid afternoon. It is the perfect excuse to go thrifting. Every thrift store on the island is new to me so every trip is an adventure! Today we went to a little thrift store on Hickam Air Force Base. It was rad. Then we went to Target- and ya’ll know how much I love target. Here’s a selection of what we brought home.

I am in love with these red shoes for me (excuse the chippy green/naked toes please!). They are BC foorwear and were three bucks! The little black shoes are for Jack and the tiny flip flops we`re for Ging, but while I was taking this photo I noticed that it’s not a pair but two lefts. oh well.

giant plastic bunny. 50 cents. I have another one of these somewhere and I think that they are so charming!

lots o’ non-smelly towels. We only brought two towels with us and they would certainly have sufficed, but the washer and/or dryer in this temporary house makes all of our clothes smell bad coming out of the wash. The clothes are tolerable but the towels are awful! I have dreaded taking showers because I always feel like I’m drying off with a towel that’s been soaked in gross, even when it’s right out of the dryer! The landlord has sent several people out to check it out but nothing has gotten better so I bought us enough towels to make it through without washing them. Ha!

cutie cute mr cutiepants. he will probably end up in someone’s Easter basket.

mater! We have a little boy turning 2 this week and he is so into Cars. mater was thrifted for two dollars and he kept Jack happy as I shopped.

and you need a lightning to go with mater! this one will race when you shake him and he’s going to get wrapped up for Mr Jack’s birthday.

we also got tiny hawaiian bananas. awesome.

ok, so I did tell myself that I really shouldn’t buy any more books to make into journals until I went through the ones that I had- but goodness me… how could I resist these guys?! Jack and I ventured out early this morning to hit up a huge charity yard sale at the fairgrounds and the vintage books were amazing. I wasn’t prepared to be buying books- I’m 8 months pregnant, arms already full of goodies to purchase, pushing an umbrella stroller (you know, the ones with NO storage space underneath?)- and somehow I walked out of there with about 30 books. It’s called pushing-and-pulling-a-box-crammed-full-of-books-to-the-front-of-the-sale-while-pushing-a-stroller. Or something- perhaps I’ll work out another title later, but I’m sure that it was hilarious to watch. One elderly lady asked me when the baby was due and when she found out it’s next month she exclaimed, “oh my! Should you be out and about?”

Of course I should. =) And, I’ll be at the Palafox Market tomorrow too. If you’re in Pensacola, FL, swing on by- I’m discounting a bunch of journals that have been around a while to give me some room for these new beauties. I can’t wait to cut them up.

I make journals for two reasons. One. I like to shop at thrift stores. Like is actually an understatement. If you asked me what I wanted to do for my birthday, or possibly for my last day on earth, I would probably reply, “wander St. Vinnies”. Having a purpose in this wandering and allowing myself to purchase large quantities of something is so satisfying to me. Two. I write in a journal everyday, and have since I was 13. This means that I have mountains of journals that are filled with longings and milkshake consumption and middle-of-the-night ramblings. It also means that I myself consume journals faster than I can find ones to like.

In my quest for super quirky books to turn into journals, I often find books that fit the bill but I can’t bring myself to destroy. Here are a collection of just such books from my journal-making adventure this last year. Many of these are now in Jack’s room, waiting for the time when he needs a story to fall asleep.
